THE STORY BEHIND THE PROJECT
After losing his son, a U.S. Marine, in a car accident, Cuvée Coffee founder and veteran Mike McKim was overwhelmed by grief. Among his son's belongings was a plate carrier patch he'd worn directly over his heart. Mike began carrying that patch with him every day.
While friends admired his strength, Mike was struggling with grief so profound that he'd lost his will to live. A close friend and Navy Special Operations veteran encouraged him to try psychedelic-assisted therapy, an experience that had changed his own life.
Mike brought his son's patch to his first retreat, holding it throughout an experience he believes saved his life.
A CONNECTION MADE PERMANENT
For Mike, the patch was more than something to remember his son by. It was something he'd held on to through the darkest period of his life.
Eventually, he decided he wanted to make that connection permanent.
He sought out renowned realism tattoo artist Charles Huurman with a very specific vision: recreate his son's patch so faithfully that it looked as though the actual patch were resting on his skin, positioned directly over his heart, exactly where his son had worn it.
What began as a deeply personal tribute became an unexpected friendship. Through their conversations and shared love of coffee, Mike and Charles began imagining how they could help others access the kind of experience that had changed Mike's life.
That idea became Psychedel-INK.
Many U.S. veterans return home carrying the lasting effects of service, including PTSD, traumatic brain injury, depression, and other invisible wounds. For too many, traditional treatments haven't provided the lasting relief they deserve.
The Psychedel-INK Project brings together coffee, tattoo art, and community to support organizations working to expand access to emerging psychedelic-assisted therapies for veterans and their families.
For too many veterans, coming home isn't the end of the fight.
PTSD. Traumatic brain injury. Depression. Addiction. Grief.
Veterans take their lives every day. One every 33 minutes.
Nearly one in three people with PTSD may attempt suicide.
Veterans' caregivers experience increased anxiety.
